Caregiver Burnout

Caregiver Burnout
A traumatic brain injury is not a “one and done” incident.  After the initial acute phase of care ends, the chronic phase of care begins.  The family members and friends who step into the caregiver role at this time are often faced with challenges of their own as they navigate this new role.

One thing caregivers need to be on the lookout for is the potential for burnout.  Burnout occurs when the tasks of caring for their loved one contribute to increased levels of chronic stress and exhaustion.  This can cause anxiety, depression, and mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion. In turn, this can lead to an overall decreased quality of life and may even impact the ability to properly care for their loved one.

Whenever the level of burnout reaches a point where the caregiver feels overwhelmed and unable to care for their own needs, they should reach out for support and help.  This can come from their own family and friends, who can offer a break from the caregiving duties.  It can also come from other caregivers, who can empathize with the situation and offer emotional support.  Or, it can come through professional help, such as therapy, meeting with a social worker, or finding other outside resources.

It is important to seek help if you feel burnt out.
How can Villa Licci help?
Once Villa Liccci is built, caregivers will have an additional resource and support to help alleviate burnout.  When they are able to see their loved ones living more independently within a supportive community, caregivers will feel some of the emotional burden eased.  The physical, day-to-day caregiving duties will also be relieved, as their loved ones will physically be in their own space.

Villa Licci will be a support not only for survivors of traumatic brain injuries, but also for their families and loved ones.
